Barnsley’s 1912 F.A. Cup Win

Still the only team to win the FA Cup in Yorkshire, My painting of Barnsley F.C.’s 1912 FA Cup winning superstars was created using acrylic paint and gold leaf on canvas. The gold leaf on the shirts being a metaphor of a golden era. Even though our FA Cup win was many years ago, there is a great sense of pride knowing we have won the competition. Not many clubs have won the FA Cup so to do that in any era is something to acknowledge. Only Newcastle stopped us from being two time winners of the competition when we were defeated in 1910.  I had the pleasure of completing the painting in Box 16 at Oakwell with the pitch and stadium in view as inspiration. A superb video created and loaded up to youtube by legendary oakwell historian David Wood, who has an unbelievable knowledge of Barnsley FC, so much so that I’m sure he is a time traveller, remembering tackles from 1988, the exact minute, nature and outcome. I’m sure he was there in 1912 to see our famous victory, and if you ever meet him you’ll know what I mean. David is an absolute gentleman and a passionate red and has been instrumental to my involvement with the Super Reds. I cant thank him enough for pushing my paintings. A very good friend and he has been extremely helpful and generous in giving his time to make sure I had as much information as possible to complete the project to the best of my ability. He is a barnsley FC encyclopaedia and his book titled “Lifting the Cup” The story of Battling Barnsley 1910-1912 is a fantastic piece of footballing history and memorabilia for any Barnsley fan.
