Spirit of Hoyland Wall Mural

This wall mural, and supporting painting, entitled ‘Spirit of Hoyland’ is a collective celebration of Hoyland – and Barnsley’s – rich industrial heritage. As deeply rooted as appearing on the Barnsley coat of arms (a coal miner and glass blower), the culture of industry has long formed the backbone of these communities.

Having won a competition for the opportunity to create this piece, I paid further tribute to these skills with representative glass workers and miners being included within my piece. With parts of the 60’s Ken Loach movie, Kes, being filmed in Hoyland, I would have been remiss to not include Billy and his Kestrel. In fact the mural has already become inspiration in itself! Just love that these characters have also been used by the town for a range of other flags and supporting décor.

It can’t be understated just how fulfilling it is, to have my art on such prominent public display. Any artist is humbled when they get the opportunity to display their work so feely and publicly but – with my family ties to the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough – I am beyond proud to have my work on public display here! This is for the towns people to view as they go about their days, prompting thoughts of the past, reminiscing, remembering and – above all – celebrating the spirit and pride of the town. I hope it’ll help add a smile to some faces.
